Whilst losing a pet is difficult for anyone, children rarely understand the concept that pets' lives are generally shorter and therefore grief at sometime is to be expected.  Losing their first friend that soon becomes their best friend can be so difficult for a child, especially when for most, this will be their first experience of grief.  A pet is an ever present, loving companion and fundamental part of their world so their eventual passing, leaves a huge hole in the world they know, that is difficult to understand. 

Having something to focus on, perhaps hold or talk to, can often give children an outlet for their emotion, which is why a keepsake that is in memory of their pet is often hugely helpful in coming to terms with the loss of their friend.
